According to an article in the International Herald Tribune the drug Bumetanide has made a big comeback. It is the diuretic that NFL players have been using and it has long been banned from use by professional athletic association.
Athletes have been known to use for rapid loss of pounds so they can look cut and trim on the playing field. Athletes also use it to increase urine production and mask the use of steroids.
This powerful prescription drug works by having the body reabsorb water and sodium from what will eventually become urine. In effect, this potent diuretic exchanging sodium in urine for potassium. The end result from taking the drug is that the user urinates more.
The reason the drug was banned in the first place is because it causes severe dehydration. The athlete also loses potassium, which is key to many body functions — most notably, to keeping the heart beating.
The drug is almost exclusively prescribed to control swelling for patients with heart failure, kidney disease and people with swelling of the limbs, toes and fingers.
The drug has been banned for so long that when news that the drug had once again infiltrated the National Football league they had to call in the experts. Nobody could recall how the drug actually works. It is after all easy to detect and quite dangerous. How is it that drug tests could miss it?
Under the NFL drug policy, players are ultimately accountable for everything that goes in their body. To help them make choices, the league contracts with a not-for-profit company, NSF, that tests supplements. The seal is called the EAS. Currently, EAS products are the only ones certified in the NFL program through NSF
You can get it over the counter in weight building and weight loss supplements but it is not as powerful l as the prescription strength pill and that is what NFL players have been lately accused of abusing.
