According to an article in the International Herald Tribune the drug Bumetanide has made a big comeback. It is the diuretic that NFL players have been using and it has long been banned from use by professional athletic association.

Athletes have been known to use for rapid loss of pounds so they can look cut and trim on the playing field. Athletes also use it to increase urine production and mask the use of steroids.

This powerful prescription drug works by having the body reabsorb water and sodium from what will eventually become urine. In effect, this potent diuretic exchanging sodium in urine for potassium. The end result from taking the drug is that the user urinates more.

The reason the drug was banned in the first place is because it causes severe dehydration. The athlete also loses potassium, which is key to many body functions — most notably, to keeping the heart beating.

The drug is almost exclusively prescribed to control swelling for patients with heart failure, kidney disease and people with swelling of the limbs, toes and fingers.

The drug has been banned for so long that when news that the drug had once again infiltrated the National Football league they had to call in the experts. Nobody could recall how the drug actually works. It is after all easy to detect and quite dangerous. How is it that drug tests could miss it?

Under the NFL drug policy, players are ultimately accountable for everything that goes in their body. To help them make choices, the league contracts with a not-for-profit company, NSF, that tests supplements. The seal is called the EAS. Currently, EAS products are the only ones certified in the NFL program through NSF

You can get it over the counter in weight building and weight loss supplements but it is not as powerful l as the prescription strength pill and that is what NFL players have been lately accused of abusing.

According to a recent article in Science Daily, a research study published in the FASEB Journal describes how your freckles might be making you fat. Apparently people who have trouble losing weight also make a common antioxidant called melanin in excess. The study was conducted at George Mason University and was a co-research project done in conjunction with INOVA Fairfax Hospital.

Melanin is a very common antioxidant and it helps regulate our skin and eye color. at cells in obese people produce melanin in excess–when they were comparing fat cells of obese people to those of people with normal weight. After the comparison, they found that the gene responsible for making melanin was working in “overdrive” in the fat cells of obese people.

The thing that makes this discovery so exciting is that it makes the invention of a drug that specifically targets fats cells completely possible. In fact some of these drugs already exist and are already FDA approved and available. The fact that they are available is very encouraging should they prove effective for weight loss in the clinical trials that are mandatory to be done before these prescription drugs can be sold and used.

Obesity increases the risk of developing terrible health conditions, such as high blood pressure, stroke, osteoarthritis, dyslipidemia, Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke, gallbladder disease, cancer sleep apnea and respiratory diseases.

No pill can replace diet and exercise but these ones, if approved by the FDA, just might come close. Hopefully this drug will help reduce the enormous cost that obesity causes our culture.

Drug for Opoid Addiction Invented

Friday, October 31st, 2008

A new prescription drug for opioid addiction and chronic addiction has been invented but unfortunately it has not been approved just yet by any governing regulatory body in any country. The drug, which is known as Probuphine has been rejected for this purpose by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office but the reason why is not quite obvious just yet.

According to WELT online the problem is in the way the drug is dispensed somehow. It is actually implanted in the patient and programmed to deliver the medication over a period of six months. This type of drug delivery is also known as subcutaneous prescription drug delivery. The idea is that the drug delivery system and the drug are technologically merged to become delivery device and drug in one.

The drug company Titan developed this continuous drug delivery system that consists of a small, rod made out of ethylene vinyl acetate and the drug buprenorphine. The drug is then slowly released at continuous levels at a constant rate that mimics a series puff intravenous injections.

It is expected that Titan Pharmaceuticals will probably approach the FDA in the U.S. for further approval of the drug by 2009. Products based on ProNeura technology can provide controlled drug release on an outpatient basis over extended periods of up to 6-12 months. Titan also has two other products, gallium maltolate and DITPA, in earlier stages of development.

Keep in mind that when reading any blog online about drugs in development that there are laws that govern forward looking statements about drug development and that this blog, like all others online is based on speculation of what possibly a company like Titan might do with this new drug for addiction and pain.

Harmful Drug Used to Stop Smoking!

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

According to an article in the online edition of Natural News the FDA has issued a Public Health Advisory to alert the public and health care professionals about Chanted. This new prescription drug causes serious health problems in the form of neuropsychiatric symptoms.
The neuropsychiatric symptoms provoked by the drug include mood changes, vivid and unusual dreams, acting like one is drunk and hallucinations.
Chantrix is normally prescribed to help people prevent smoking but as useful as it is for that the behavioral fallout might not be worth it at all.
Although the FDA has issued warnings about this prescription drug it is still working hard with Pfizer, the pharmaceutical giant to make sure that all of the health risks are clearly labeled with the material that comes with the label.
In particular the drug can be very dangerous for individuals who have preexisting psychiatric illness such as manic depression, depression, personality disorders, schizophrenia or anxiety. Chantrix has been found to make these symptoms worse!
The worst case scenario is the individual who becomes suicidal as a result of taking the drug. Friends, family and health care professionals need to keep an eye on the potential non smoker who is not taking the drug to make sure that they do not have massive mood swings or the kind of little habits that can lead to suicidal behavior. At the first sign of any kind of psychotic episode the person should be taken immediately to the hospital.
Furthermore anyone taking this drug should be treated with the same concern as someone who is drinking alcohol. The person should not operate heavy machinery or drive while under the influence of the Chantrix Stop Smoking prescription drug. Needless to say this prescription non smoking drug is also a disaster if you decide to take it at the same time as a glass of wine or beer. Psychotic symptoms are practically guaranteed if you decide to do this.
